SOUTHBURY - Rosalyn Schoonmaker died peacefully in her home in Southbury, CT on October 25th, after an extended illness. Rosalyn was born on September 28, 1930 to Albert Beninson and Ida Krakow of Danbury Connecticut. Her sister Evelyn and two brothers Leonard and David predeceased her, as did her husband Ralph and children Gail and Ray. Roz is survived by grandchildren Selyna, Andrea, Katie, Jason and Daryl, by many Great Grandchildren, and by her nephew and niece Mark and Lori Beninson.
Rosalyn was an experienced educator whose impactful work will be evidenced for generations to come. She received her Bachelor's Degree in education from Danbury State Teacher's College. She was involved in many activities supporting teachers, and received awards for her tireless efforts to improve working conditions for educators. Notably, she was arrested during a sit-in in 1978 while striking for benefits. Her passion for education was most evident during her tenure in Bridgeport in instructing remedial reading to at-risk students.
She was a long-time and engaged member of her synagogue, B'nai Israel. Rosalyn loved to travel, and she really loved to shop. Given the opportunity to be a fashionista of fashion she would love to wow the crowd with Sparkling eyewear and rhinestone studded clothing and shoes. She also enjoyed puzzles and word games, along with her cats Midnight and Elizabeth.
Her family is grateful for her passion and dedication, and the high bar of service she has set for us all. Carpino Funeral Home of Southbury have been entrusted with the arrangements. To leave a message of remembrance, please visit www.CarpinoCares.com.
