Richard Tweedie Tribute

SOUTHBURY - Richard "Papa" Tweedie, 86, of Heritage Village and formerly of East Falmouth, Massachusetts, departed this life on May 21, 2021 at Vitas Hospice at St. Mary's Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy "Mimi" (Marchlewski) Tweedie for 64 years.

Richard was born in Jersey City, NJ on October 11, 1934 to the late Hilliard and Alice (Budd) Tweedie.

He graduated from Rutgers University with a B.S. in Chemistry and as a Major in the Air Force ROTC. He was honorably discharged after four years of active service in various assignments in the UK and the USA. Richard was employed at Uniroyal Chemical for over 40 years in various managerial positions in Connecticut and Ohio.

Papa loved being at their summer home in East Falmouth, Cape Cod with his wife Dorothy "Mimi." He especially enjoyed relaxing at the beach with family, taking long walks in the salty air, going to book sales at the Falmouth Green, taking day trips to Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and Woods Hole, flying kites at Falmouth Heights, going for a swim at the Great Harbors pool, canoeing around the salt pond, grilling a meal, and ringing the "cocktail bell" at 5 p.m. Family meant everything to him, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss his bear hugs and his strong, quiet and gentle way. He brought so much joy to all fortunate to know him.

He loved watching UCONN basketball, and was an avid New York Yankees and New York Giants fan. In earlier years he was a talented pastels artist, creating portraits of the famous and not so famous. He also greatly enjoyed living at Heritage Village. He was blessed to have so many terrific neighbors and friends over the 26+ years there whom he would run into at the pool, the gym and the woodworking barn.

In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his daughter Mary (Healey) Crescenzi and son-in-law Gene Crescenzi, of Middletown and East Haven CT; son William and daughter-in-law Marcey (Valuskas) Tweedie of Southbury, CT; son Robert and daughter-in-law Earline (Bruce) Tweedie of North Andover, MA; eight grandchildren: Matthew, Caitlin, Rebecca, Eric, Noelle, Kathryn, Brooke, and David; three great-grandchildren Arianna, Melody, and Trinity; brother John "Jack" Tweedie of Langhorne, PA; sister and brother-in-law Grace (Tweedie) and Ray Struzynski of Monroe Twp., NJ; sister-in-law Mary (McCarthy) Tweedie of Cumberland, RI, and a large extended family of nieces and nephews and their children. He was pre-deceased by his brother Francis "Frank" Tweedie of Cumberland, RI; sister-in-law Connie (Yalch) Tweedie of Yardley, PA and son-in-law Clinton Healey of Middletown, CT.
