Norma Fogarty Tribute

SOUTHBURY - Norma B. Fogarty 94, of Pomperaug Woods Senior Living Community, Southbury, died peacefully on Sunday October 17th, 2021 at Danbury Hospital.  She was a long time Nurse and Nursing Instruction in both New York City and Yonkers, NY. and the widow of award winning fine and commercial artist Paul Fogarty.  Norma was born in 1926 in Montreal Canada.  She was the mother of a son, Thomas Fogarty and is survived by a daughter in law and a grandson.

Norma graduated from High School in Montreal and later immigrated to the US.  She studied Nursing at St. John's Hospital, lived with her beloved Aunt Rose and Uncle Nelson and went on to practice nursing in New York City.  She did volunteer work at Dorothy Day at Catholic Worker houses in NYC and The Grail School at Grailville in Loveland, Ohio.  It was there that she met her husband, Paul whom she married in 1961. 

The young couple initially lived in Bronxville and Blauvelt New York and then moved to Brookfield, CT. Norma found her metier by becoming a psychiatric nursing instructor at Cochran School of Nursing in Yonkers, NY and stayed until her retirement at 71.  She was beloved by her students and encouraged them to be successful.  She was virtuosic at encouraging students who faced life and academic challenges to successful careers in nursing.  Her former students have senior positions in numerous health care settings. Up until her death she remanded in daily contact with some of them.  Later in her life, Norma went on to earn Masters Degrees in both Education and Nursing while working full time at Cochran.  Her husband Paul always encouraged her academic and career endeavors.  After retirement Norma volunteered at Literacy Volunteers and enjoyed encouraging and helping immigrants.   

She moved to Pomperaug Woods in 2014.  There she joined her lifelong friend Veronica Berrill whom she had first met at the Grail and made numerous new friends.  Norma enjoyed all of the lectures, book club, music and art programs at Pomperaug Woods.  Norma had a wonderful life and lived it very well. From youth to old age, Norma's life and work were animated by her love for her family, her dedication to nursing and teaching and encouraging others to succeed.    She will be missed by her family and friends.  

The family will receive visitors on Monday, October 25, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main St. South in Southbury. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main Street South in Southbury. Interment will take place Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Prince of Peace Cemetery, 119 Junction Rd in Brookfield.  For directions, or to leave a message of remembrance, please visit www.CarpinoCares.com.
