SOUTHBURY - Michael S. Smith, 67, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2023, at the West Haven VA Hospital after a valiant fight with cancer.
Michael was born on January 22, 1956, in Stamford to the late Alton and Nancy (McNamara) Smith.
Michael graduated from Rippowam High School in Stamford in 1975. Prior to retirement, Michael worked as a loan officer at Union Trust Bank. He served honorably and proudly in the United States Army having attained a National Defense Service Medal in several disciplines.
In his youth, he was an accomplished golfer, bowler and billiards player. Michael was involved in several support groups that had significant influence on his life.
Michael was an extremely generous and thoughtful person who never missed an occasion to send a greeting card. He had a love for all animals, especially his beloved cat, Skittles. Michael also contributed regularly to many animal rescue organizations and his favorite charities, especially Toys for Tots.
Michael is survived by his siblings, Lorraine Stidd, Gregory Smith and wife Joyce; Margaret Collins; Noreen Palumbo; and Bernadette Nuelle and husband Mark.
Michael took great pride in being an uncle to his many nieces and nephews including Gregory Smith, Jr. and wife Samantha and their son Ty; Erin (Smith) Hansen and husband Kevin and their children Elizabeth (Lizzie) and William; Michael Collins, Jr. and his wife Caitlin; Kelly (Palumbo) Graham and husband Jason; Christopher Nuelle; Thomas Palumbo; Sean Nuelle; and Matthew (Mattie) Palumbo.
The family will receive visitors on Sunday, November 19, 2023, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM at the Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main St. S., Southbury. A funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00 PM.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, November 20, 2023, at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Falls Village, CT at 10:00 AM.
Memorial donations can be made in Michael's name to ASPCA and North Shore Animal League.
