SOUTHBURY - Michael Patrick Halford, age 92, departed this life on October 16, 2023 at Watermark at East Hill. He was the beloved husband of Ann Gormley Halford. They most recently celebrated 66 years of marriage. Michael lived his life based on faith, family and service.
Michael was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on February 8, 1931 to Michael ("Wee Mick") Halford and Bridget ("Wee Della") Cassidy Barnes Halford, both of whom had emigrated from Glasgow Scotland in the 1920's. Michael was so proud of his Scottish heritage and forever grateful to his parents for giving him the gift of life.
Michael attended Saint Alphonsus in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and graduated from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn. For all his life he remained grateful to the School Sisters of Notre Dame and the LaSalle Christian Brothers for the splendid job they did. Following his graduation from Loughlin, he worked for Western Union until he was drafted into the US Army during the Korean Conflict where he served as the secretary to the commanding general of the 24th Infantry Division, based in both Japan and South Korea. Upon returning to the US, Michael worked for Esso Corporation and ultimately joined the IBM Corporation where he worked in Human Resources for over 30 years. He had tremendous pride in his accomplishments at IBM and was proud to be a "Big Blue" alum.
Michael and Ann built and maintained many friendships over the years in all the communities in which they lived including, Flushing, NY; Tarrytown, NY; West Palm Beach, FL; and Southbury, CT. Both devoted Roman Catholics, they were always active in their local parish. They felt very blessed to have been a part of the Midd-South Catholic/Sacred Heart Parish for these last 19 years. In 2021 Michael and Ann moved to the Watermark and again forged new friendships and bonds. Michael always said that the Watermark provided a "little taste of heaven".
Besides his loving wife Ann, Michael is survived by his three daughters; Mary Ann Halford, Peggy Halford and Patty (Joe) Kiely. He also leaves behind his five grandchildren whom he treasured dearly; Kathleen Ann Meaney, Christopher Halford Kiely, Michael Thomas Kiely, Timothy Gormley Kiely & Madeline Bridget Kiely as well as his sister Margaret Halford Smith and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Michael is predeceased by his brother Joseph Halford.
