Mary Hurlie Tribute

Mary Hurlie passed away in God’s grace and within the warm embrace of her family on November 22, 2020 in Southbury, Connecticut.

Mary Alice (Short) Hurlie was born on July 7, 1923 in Brooklyn NY the daughter of the late Michael A. and Anna (Coyle) Short. Her family moved to Yonkers, NY when Mary was a young child and she spent virtually her whole life in Westchester County (Yonkers, Mt. Vernon, Pelham, White Plains) moving to Southbury CT in 1997 with her late husband Chet.

Mary attended Our Lady of Victory grammar school and was awarded a high school scholarship to The Ursuline School in New Rochelle where she graduated with honors.

On July 7, 1945 at Our Lady of Victory Church in Mt. Vernon, she married the love of her life, Chet Hurlie while he was on military leave from the US Army and together they shared 60 years of marriage and raised 6 children. While Mary worked outside of the home for many years she considered her family her most important and privileged vocation.

At birth, her parents dedicated her to the Blessed Mother and throughout her life Mary continued to honor her in every way. She was a daily communicant at the various parishes to which she belonged over the years - Our Lady of Victory (Mt. Vernon) St. Catharine’s (Pelham), St. John’s (White Plains) and Sacred Heart in Southbury (where she felt blessed to have served as Eucharistic Minister) and lived her life with honesty, integrity, humility, grace, compassion and joy.

Mary was a woman of family and faith and she loved both fiercely. She was the proud mother of 6, a loving grandmother to 10 and a joyous great-grandmother (aka “Grape”) to 13. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her devoted children Dennis T. Hurlie (Palm Coast, FL), Kathleen Hurlie (Mashpee, MA), Patricia Hurlie-Smith (New Haven, CT), Mary M. Hurlie (Shelburne, VT), Eileen Landin (Liverpool, NY) and Coleen Hurlie-Dunn (Bethany, CT). She is also survived by her loving children-in-law Jim Dunn, Cheryl Gibson and Karen Hurlie, as well as her beloved grandchildren Dennis M. Hurlie, Brian Hurlie (Yahaira), Maureen Eatman (Irvin), Katie Venice (Bobby), Christy Brown (Donny), Jarod Smith (Sara), Devin Landin, Jessica Kearsing (Mark), Matthew Landin and Christopher Dunn. She will be greatly missed by her adored great-grandchildren Emma, Lucas, Nick, Mikey, Raio, Luke, Kellan, Robert, Scott, Julie, Emily, James and Joseph.

She also leaves behind to celebrate her life, her brother William Short (Peggy), sister Teresa Murphy and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends, all of whom brought such joy to Mary’s life.

She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Chet T. Hurlie, her sisters Sr. Ann Michael O.P., Elizabeth Larm, and Madeline Short as well as her son-in-law Mark Landin, brothers-in-law Chuck Larm, George Murphy and Doug Hurlie and her sister–in-law Elaine Hurlie.

Our family is so thankful to all those on “Mary’s Team” who provided medical, hospice and daily care so lovingly, allowing her to pass at home in peace and with dignity. She was comforted by those in her “family of faith” at Sacred Heart Church who kept her in their prayers – and especially Monsignor Donnelly and Mary Wanag both of whom brought the comfort of the sacraments to Mary at home.

Mary’s passions were her family and her faith and not a day went by where she did not demonstrate her love and joy with each. She lived a life of service to others, volunteering in her community and never too busy to lend a hand to those in need. Mary will be greatly missed by family and friends and will forever occupy a special place in their hearts. Her family feels blessed to have had her in their lives and we are greatly comforted in knowing that Mary is now with the angels in God’s presence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on November 27, 2020 at 11AM at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main St. South, Southbury, CT, followed by burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Southbury.
