Martha Matheu

SOUTHBURY - Martha Fulkerson Matheu (77) succumbed to this thing called "Life" on Sunday, March 21, 2021. A native of Connecticut, Martha had met her husband of almost 50 years, Bob Matheu (deceased) in California before once again moving back to the Nutmeg State. She made one other foray into the world while living in Stuart, FL, before returning three years ago.

Martha was extremely loving and proud of her two children, daughter Kate, husband Mark and grandson Matthew of Dillon, CO; and son Trey and wife Jenny Matheu of Farmington, PA. Martha is also survived by three siblings - sister Mary Hamilton of San Mateo, CA; brother Chuck Fulkerson, of Newtown, CT; and sister Heidi Pianka of Middlebury, CT. Martha is also survived by many nieces and nephews (including some of the "grand" persuasion), whom she felt closely and lovingly towards. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Elizabeth Fulkerson. 

Throughout Martha's lifetime, she enjoyed many careers, starting after her graduation from the Wheelock College of Education and Human Development in Boston after which she moved to  San Jose, CA, where started her career as a grade school teacher. Upon returning to Connecticut a few years later, she continued to teach at the Burnam School in Bridgewater, CT until the birth of her son. After the birth of her daughter, Martha rejoined the educational ranks at the Judea Nursery School in Washington, CT. She continued her curiosity and successfully passed her Real Estate agent exam, working for Hollingsworth Realty which became Sotheby's prior to her retirement and move to Florida.

She was an artist, a published author, sculptor and all-round creative spirit. She was also an active member in the Washington Garden Club, serving as their president; the Birthday Club (from which she garnered many close friends and long lunches of celebration), the Washington Brownies; and the Treasure Coast Humane Society, where Martha and her favorite child, Lucy the Yorkshire Terrier, participated in the Paws of Love program bringing happiness to senior living residents throughout the Treasure Coast area. Martha was also an active member at the Willoughby Golf Club engaging in the Breast Cancer Gala affair, the 9-Holers Club, and weekly Mahjongg gatherings which she truly enjoyed. 

Services for Martha will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 11am located at the Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main St. S., Southbury, CT 06488.
