Jule Rogers Tribute

Jule M. Rogers (nee McCarthy) passed away peacefully this week at age 87. Jule was born in 1933 in Manhattan, NY and grew up in the Bronx, NY, where she lived with her sisters and parents during the school year, and spent summers at the family bungalow at Breezy Point, Far Rockaways in Queens. She attended St. Simon Stock Catholic High School in the Bronx, where she was a cheerleader, and later earned an associate degree from Packard Business College in Manhattan. During high school and college, Jule worked  as a department store salesgirl, secretary and occasional flight attendant for Northeast Airlines, and even one stint with her sister Jane as game show hostesses on Beat the Clock.

Jule met her husband, Benjamin F. Rogers of Brooklyn in 1949, and they were married in 1954 in New York. They lived in Brooklyn, Massapequa, Smithtown, and Huntington, where they raised five children and were active members of their communities and in particular Sts. Philip and James parish in St. James, NY. Jule worked as a classroom aide and typing teacher for the Smithtown Central School District, with many years spent at the former Smithtown West High School. While in her 50s, Jule lost both parents, her husband, and her twin sister, Jane Souther, within a period of five years due to various illnesses. A few years later, she would suffer the loss of her remaining sister, Joan Burns.

Jule retired to Southbury, CT and Heritage Village Community, where she was an active resident. She learned the game of golf at the age of 65 and was a devoted, if occasionally frustrated, fan and participant of the sport for the remainder of her years. She spent much of her time off the golf course involved with activities in her parish church, Sacred Heart, reading many books, traveling to New York City for shows and concerts, taking trips abroad, and keeping up with friends and family through letters and email. Most importantly, Jule enjoyed visiting her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their respective families, especially when any of these visits occurred at her favorite place, the beach.

She is survived by her children: son Stephen (Selden, NY), son Brian and daughter-in-law Juli (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), son Douglas and daughter-in-law Michele (Randolph, NJ), son Gregg and daughter-in-law Lucy (State College, PA), and daughter Claire (Morris) and son-in-law Jim (Manhasset, NY), as well as  13 grandchildren: Alex, Coverly, Hannah, Colin, Brendan, Quinn, Emily, Cecilia, Genevieve, Benjamin, Hailey, Grace, and James. She is also survived by her devoted nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren, as well as a host of friends.

Funeral Services will be held at Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury CT, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Southbury CT, and burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Huntington, NY.
