James M. Dunn, Jr. of Southbury, formerly of Franklin Lakes, NJ, and Hilton Head, SC died peacefully on August 31, 2021. He was 89 years old. Jim or Jay, as he was known to his family, was born November 20, 1931, in Paterson, NJ, son of the late James M. and Lillian Greene Dunn.
Jim graduated from Newark Academy, Newark, NJ in 1950 and from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. After graduation, he worked for the Ford Motor Company, Detroit, MI in the Management Training Program until he was called to active duty in the US Air Force where he served as Budget Officer at Williams Air Force Base, Chandler, AZ. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain then attended the Harvard Business School, graduating with an MBA in 1959 and upon graduation worked first for the Vick Chemical Company in NYC as Assistant to the Treasurer then for GTE (now part of Verizon) where he became Vice-President and Treasurer and President of GTE Investment Management Company. He later served as a Vice-President for the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States and for McGraw-Hill/Standard & Poors Company both located in NYC. He then formed Hinchliffe Investment Management Company which he successfully ran for 15 years.
Jim was a member of various financial organizations and served on several school boards and church councils. In his personal life, Jim had a passion for teaching, sailing, and gardening. He was happy to teach finance/investing to small groups of people or individuals. For many years he volunteered to teach classes at a retirement community in South Carolina for residents concerned about making their retirement funds last. As a youngster, he became an avid sailor and was often found sailing the waters of Greenwood Lake, NJ. His love of sailing continued throughout his life as did his love of gardening.
Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irma Rose Hinchliffe Dunn, his three sons, James III of Southbury, and his stepchildren Autumn, Jason, Jasmine, and Kassie, William and his wife Kelly of Fairfield, and their children Anthony and Julie, and Thomas of Ithaca, NY; sisters-in-law Marie Hinchliffe, Pittsburgh, PA, Anita (Robert) Weiss, Lancaster, PA, Rose (John) Fox, Cary, NC, and many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his sister Jean (Thomas) Wickenden, sister-in-law Mary (Robert) Barr, and brother-in-law Joseph Hinchliffe.
The family gratefully acknowledges the staffs at The Lutheran Home of Southbury, The Hearth of Southbury and Hartford HealthCare Hospice for their thoughtfulness, kindness and support for Jim while he was in their care.
