Hildegard (Mayr) Bayer

SOUTHBURY - Hildegard V. (Mayr) Bayer, 85, departed this life on December 20, 2021, at the Lutheran Home of Southbury, CT. She was the beloved wife of the late William (Bill) Bayer. Hildegard was born in Augsburg, Germany on February 28, 1936, to the late Therese and Xavier Mayr.

Hildegard grew up in Augsburg, Germany with one sister, Maria, and three brothers, Leo, Erwin and Tony.  She came to the United States in 1958 at the age of 22.  Hildegard lived in the Bronx, New York, which is where she met Bill. In 1976, they moved to Southbury. It is here that they formed many special friendships, especially those from the neighborhood.

Over the years, Hildegard held positions at Metropolitan Life and Grolier/Scholastic, but her favorite "job" was being Mimi to her grandchildren, who she adored, and they adored her back, as she was always so patient, loving and kind. Hildegard had many special talents including baking, gardening, knitting and crocheting.  She was always making meals and delicious cakes and desserts for every occasion.  She had an incredible green thumb and was proud of her beautiful garden and flowers, which she worked very hard to maintain.  

Hildegard had a very strong Catholic faith and was proud to be an active member of Sacred Heart Church.  She loved to spend time with her family, and friends that were like family to her.  She was an excellent host and always made sure that you had a cold drink in your hand. Everyone knew when going to Hildegard's to come hungry and leave full! Her kind heart and generous spirit will leave a lasting legacy on all that knew her.

Hildegard is survived by her daughter Janice O'Keeffe and her husband Rick, and their children Allie and Ryan, son Christopher Bayer and his wife Jennifer and their children Robert and Jillian. 

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Lutheran Home of Southbury for their excellent care and support.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Hildegard at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main Street South in Southbury.  Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation immediately prior to the Mass in the Daily Chapel of the church from 10:00 - 10:45 AM.  Burial will take place at New North Cemetery in Woodbury.
