Doris E. Sargent
October 9, 1935 ~ October 1, 2023 (age 87) 87 Years Old
SOUTHBURY - Doris Evelyn (Schmidt) Sargent, age 87, passed away October 1, 2023 at River Glen Health Care Center. She was born October 9, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY to Henry and Ellen (Nickstadt) Schmidt. She was the beloved wife of Tom for over 66 years until his passing in January 2023.
She was preceded in death by Henry Schmidt (Father), Ellen Schmidt (Mother), Henry Schmidt (brother), and Ann (Schmidt) Hoffmann (sister). Doris graduated from Grover Cleveland High School, where she was always very proud to say that she had won the history award. She and Tom were married on February 12, 1956.
From 1962 until 2003, Doris and Tom lived in Franklin Square, NY, where they raised their family. Doris was a stay at home mom while the children were young and then she began working as the church secretary at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, where they were active members. In 2004 they moved to Heritage Village in Southbury, CT.
Doris enjoyed making various crafts. Over the years she made pottery, stained glass, and decorative plates. She also enjoyed coloring, painting, and playing games - especially card games! Each holiday she'd love to come up with games to play with her grandchildren, like Christmas and Thanksgiving-themed bingo and word searches, just to name a few. She loved to shop, especially in her older years, watching and supporting QVC with her many, many purchases. Over the years, Doris was a babysitter, dogsitter, and cheerleader at her grandchildren's sports games. She always enjoyed hearing what the grandchildren (and her grandpuppy Zeus) were up to.
Doris is survived by her 3 children and their spouses: Thomas and Jennifer Cline Sargent (West Hempstead, NY); Patti and Fred Lorenzen (Simsbury, CT); Jeanne and Artie Nadler (Southbury, CT); along with 7 grandchildren: Bill Lorenzen, Kate Nadler, Kevin Nadler, Emma Lorenzen, Aidan Sargent, Eric Sargent, and Irina Sargent. She is also survived by her sister Wilma (Schmidt) Sargent, cousin Eileen Travaglia, and many nieces and nephews. Family was always the highlight of Doris' life, and she will be greatly missed by all of them.
A private graveside service will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the CT State Veterans' Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane in Middletown, CT.
Memorial Donations can be made in Doris' name to the National MS Society, Wounded Warrior Project, or a charity of your choice. To leave a message of remembrance, please visit www.CarpinoCares.com.
