Dina Carella Tribute

Dina DePalma Carella, a kind, generous mother of eight and grandmother of nine, died Feb. 8 at Westerly Hospital in Westerly, R.I. She was 90.

Dina was born May 21, 1933 in Stamford, CT, to the late Anthony and Carmella DePalma.

One of nine children, she grew up in the Springdale section of Stamford, graduating Stamford High School in 1951. She worked in the "secretarial pool" at Pitney Bowes in Stamford, where she met Angelo Carella.

They were married in 1955.

Dina loved to sing and read. She was an excellent cook, baker and plant-grower, but had a famously bad sense of direction. She loved flowers and trees and birds, good stories and old movies. She was honest, with a great sense of humor, and she was funny herself. Nobody laughed harder than Dina when she used the wrong word for something -- and that happened plenty of times.

Dina had a deep Catholic faith and was devoted to Angelo, who died in 2016. They were married 60 years.

Dina is survived by her eight children: Angela Carella of Stamford, CT; Joseph Carella of Westerly, R.I.; John Carella of Jupiter, Fla.; Mary Ellen Moltumyr (Larry) of Brandywine, Md.; Paul Carella (Selena) of Southbury, CT; Anne Pearce of Westerly, R.I.; Phyllis Penhallow (Tom) of Charlestown, R.I.; and David Carella (Angela) of Stamford, CT.

Her survivors include nine grandchildren: Nicholas (Kailee) Carella, Tess and Jacob Carella; Camille and Ana Pearce; Joseph and James Penhallow; and Angelo and David Carella Jr.

Dina also is survived by two sisters, Jeanne Perna of Stamford, CT, and Carmella Raffaele of Monroe, CT; and two brothers, Joseph DePalma (Maria) of Uncasville, CT, and George DePalma (Carol) of Oxford, CT. She was predeceased by four sisters. Finally, she enjoyed the many nieces and nephews who survive her.
