Allan Rich Tribute

SOUTHBURY - Allan Joseph Rich went home to his Lord and Savior on January 23, 2024, at the age of 81. Despite spending much of this past year in and out of the hospital, Allan never lost his sense of humor and managed his illness with strength and grace. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Allan. His pleasant personality was contagious to everyone he met. Allan was a kind man making friends everywhere he went. There was no such thing as a short trip to a grocery store or a walk on the Southbury Green without a conversation with an old friend or even a stranger in passing. He was always willing to help anyone in need and was known as "Mr. Gadget" having the ability to fix just about anything. Allan lived to eat and enjoyed taking his family to Jimmies of Savin Rock and Eastport, Maine for fresh lobster on summer vacations. You could always find Allan at his daughter's house on Taco Tuesdays and Sunday family dinners; turkey dinner was his favorite. He looked forward to any family gathering, especially the annual cousin Pierogi party, Fourth of July Pig Roasts, Labor Day picnics and never turned down a Happy hour with a fun game of Pinochle. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed annual trips with his son bear hunting in Maine, fishing the lakes of Maine on his boat and trail riding for miles on his quad in the Pennsylvania mountains. Allan loved the change of seasons, the smell of fall was his favorite and he enjoyed Sunday drives to see the Baxter State Park foliage when visiting Maine. Allan was very patriotic and was a proud veteran to serve as an Air Policeman in the U.S. Air Force. He worked at Bic Pen as a machine operator and was a security guard for IBM and Pomperaug Woods in Southbury. He also worked for Heritage Antiques and had a great interest in vintage items. Anyone who knew him would understand this when passing through his basement! He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a parishioner of the Sacred Heart Church in Southbury. His greatest pleasure in life was spending quality time with his grandchildren who knew him as Grandpa Al, never missing a milestone in their lives. His cheerful attitude and bright smile will forever be missed.

He was born to Harold and Helen (Lenihan) Rich on August 2, 1942 in New Haven, CT. Allan leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Evelyn (Stobierski) Rich; a son, Robert Rich; a daughter, Denise Schielke and son in law, Kenneth Schielke; three cherished grandchildren; McKenzie Schielke, Ava Schielke, David Schielke, and Grandpup Bear; nieces, Lisa Conroy and Vicki Zubritski-Hartman; nephew, Al Rich; great niece, Madison Conroy and great nephews; Hunter Conroy, Ben Rich, James Rich and many cousins. He is predeceased by his parents; brother, Donald Rich; son, David Rich; and nephew, Victor Zubritski.
