SOUTHBURY - Betty Halpine, Age 92 - Former New Milford resident, Alice “Betty” Elizabeth Halpine died March 17th, 2021 in Southbury Connecticut. Ms. Halpine was born April 12th, 1928 in New Milford Connecticut. She was the second child born to Stuart Francis Halpine and Alice Dickinson Halpine. Her older brother was Stuart Francis Halpine II, former mayor of New Milford. Growing up, Betty was an intelligent child who was especially interested in history and math. From a young age she was known for having well formed opinions as well as something interesting to say on almost any subject. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Arcadia College, and later a Master's Degree in accounting from Western Connecticut State College. Betty was an avid and accomplished gardener. She enjoyed sharing her love and knowledge of plants with the New Milford Garden club for many years. Always fascinated by history and genealogy, she volunteered with and donated extensively to the New Milford Historical Society. Her wealth of information on local history was greatly appreciated and admired. Ever broadminded, Betty enjoyed both traveling the world and soaking in culture at home. She particularly loved museums, theater, and opera. Later in life Betty worked tirelessly advocating for the elderly. She spent many hours volunteering with The Council on Aging, and sat on multiple committees in her retirement community in Southbury. A lifelong devout Catholic, Betty enjoyed volunteering and praying with The Confraternity of the Rosary of New Milford and The Columbiettes of Southbury. Throughout her life, Betty cared deeply for her extended family. She loved helping care for her brother's many children and grandchildren, and served as a surrogate mother to some while he was posted overseas with the US Diplomatic Corps. Betty died peacefully at ninety-two. She is survived by eight nieces and nephews, and sixteen grand-nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial for Betty will be held on April 17th at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church in Southbury followed by a Graveside Service at 11:30am at St. Francis Cemetery in New Milford.
