Luz Crowley Tribute

ROXBURY – Luz Nery Vázquez Crowley, departed this life on February 2, 2019. She was born in Rural Barrio Guadiana, Naranjito, Puerto Rico on May 26, 1939. The first child of Eladio Vázquez Cabrera and Gregoria Rivera Vázquez, granddaughter of Fernando Vázquez and Dominga Rivera, Victoria Vázquez and Julio Cabrera, all natives of Barrio Guadiana. Growing up in rural Puerto Rico she lacked many of the material things we take for granted today. However, that lack was supplanted with a huge, loving, extended family to whom Luz remained in contact with her entire life. Her unwavering Catholicism and strong work ethic enabled her to surmount life’s burdens.

Luz and Richard met in 1965 and were married on December 2, 1967. They initially lived in Stamford, CT for 6 years where her four boys were born. Then, they moved to Norwalk, CT for 8 years. While in Norwalk she and her husband started a farm market and greenhouse business. With her knowledge of plants and growing procedures Luz was the back bone of the business all while raising four small boys.

In 1981 the family moved to Roxbury, CT. Upon seeing the property, her 1st words were “I am home”. In Roxbury she recreated a small greenhouse and farm stand. Her specialties were geraniums, fuchsias, strawberries and tomatoes. She had a unique ability to create friendships. Her smile and sparkle in her eyes enabled her to communicate with people from all walks in life. None of these activities precluded her from raising her children, ironing, sewing, cooking gourmet meals like arroz con pollo, pasta, prime rib, baking bread, cakes and pies.

Luz is survived by her husband of 51 years, Richard, her son Kevin of New Milford, son Gerald and his wife Kathryn Snow, their children Ryan and Lydia, son Richard Jr. and wife Heather, children Hannah and Ashton of Woodbury, Minn. Son Joseph and Dominique Veilleux and his children Catherine and Sean. Also, brother Julio Vázquez of Willimantic, his children Cristina, Vanessa and Jonathan and her niece Lisette Torres.

Her godchildren, Lourdes Narváez and Catherine Crowley. Her “cousins”, who were like brothers and sisters, Awilda and Beatriz Espinell. Comadre Emilia Espinell Narváez and family. Aleida Ortega, Tina Ortega Cheveres and family all of Barrio Guadiana.
