SOUTHBURY - John K. Carroll, 77, of Southbury, CT., died peacefully on Saturday, January 11, after a short illness. He had been a resident of Southbury, with his wife Anne Berrill Carroll, since 2013, when the couple moved to Heritage Village from New York City. John was retired after careers as an actor, an attorney and a teacher.

Born in the Bronx on January 25, 1942, he grew up in Larchmont, N.Y., the son of the late Jack and Ruth (McNally) Carroll. Besides his wife, John leaves behind two sisters, Merigo Chianese (Tony) of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Mary Carroll Linder of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., and a brother, Edward Carroll (Bernadette), also of Sleepy Hollow, as well as seven nieces and nephews.

After graduating from Boston College in 1964 with a bachelor of arts in philosophy, John served in the U.S. Army as an armored vehicle instructor based at Fort Knox, KY. He was honorably discharged in 1968 with the rank of Sergeant E-5.

He returned to New York and began a career as a stage actor, appearing in numerous regional theater productions around the country (at the Long Wharf and Hartford Stage, among others) and on New York stages, including two Broadway shows. He also acted in several soap operas.

John earned a master’s degree in English from New York University in 1985 and in 1991, a law degree from Fordham University School of Law, where he met his wife. He practiced law for six years, first in criminal defense and later representing the City of New York in civil proceedings to protect abused and neglected children. He went on to become a middle-school Math and English teacher at several New York City private schools, retiring from the Browning School, where he taught from 2001 until 2013.
