SOUTHBURY - Barbara Green Bowen of Pomperaug Woods in Southbury died Tuesday, February 13, 2019, at the age of 96. Ms. Bowen graduated from MIT in 1946 with a degree in meteorology and earned an M.A. from Teachers’ College at Columbia University.
She had a long and varied career, much of it overseas. During World War II, she mapped flight plans for American Airlines and, afterwards, worked for Radio Free Europe, where she was chief of reference and archives. She subsequently taught mathematics at the American College for Women in Istanbul and at Queen’s College in Nigeria. She finished her career at the Ditchley Foundation in Oxfordshire, England, where she was the editor of the Ditchley journal. Her marriage ended in ecclesiastical annulment.
She leaves her sister, Natalie Canby of Leeds, Mass., and eight beloved nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at Sacred Heart Church in Southbury. Memorial contributions may be made to Polio Outreach of Connecticut, 75 Tallwood Rd., Southbury 06488.
