Peter Doherty

SOUTHBURY - Peter Sears Doherty, 85, of Southbury, passed away on May 29, 2023, surrounded by his family.  He was the loving husband of Elayne (Peltier) Doherty.

Peter was born on July 27, 1937 in Pittsfield, MA to the late Charles and Mary (Sears) Doherty. He grew up in Richmond, Massachusetts and attended Pittsfield High School. He graduated from the State Teachers College of North Adams where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Education and then his Master's In Education from Fairfield University.  Peter got a teaching position in Darien, CT where he taught Science for 35 years. Peter was a passionate teacher with a unique talent for connecting with his students. 

Peter and his wife of 64 years, Elayne raised their family in Stamford and then Fairfield, CT. Family was his focus and primary purpose in life. Peter enjoyed travel, touring much of the United States and Canada on many family road trips. He also had a talent for renovation and he and Elayne beautifully remodeled their family homes. They created a gathering spot for family and friends. After retirement he was a prolific gardener and he and Elayne became avid golfers.

Peter will be missed by his wife, Elayne, and their children: Mark (Barbara) Doherty, David (Sheila) Doherty, and Loretta (Joseph) Donovan; his grandchildren: David, Christopher, Matthew, Bryce, Mitchell, Samantha, and Abigail; as well as his siblings: Myles (Carolyn) Doherty, and David (Margi) Doherty.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by: an infant daughter Kathleen Doherty; brother Thomas Doherty; and sister Mary Karl.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main Street South in Southbury.  A visitation will be held prior to the Mass from 9:00  - 9:45 AM in the church's Daily Chapel.  Interment will take place privately.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter's memory are asked to be forwarded to Regional Hospice, 30 Milestone Road, Danbury, CT 06810 or www.RegionalHospiceCT.org.  For directions, or to leave a message of remembrance, please visit www.CarpinoCares.com
