Johanna Cahill Tribute

SOUTHBURY - Johanna Cahill, 87, passed away on October 8, 2021 after a long illness, at her home in Southbury, Connecticut. Comforted by her family, friends, and her loyal feline companion Missy. She was the loving wife of Robert M. Fabris for six years, and Thomas J. Cahill for 24 years. She was born on October 1, 1934 in New Rochelle, NY to the late Nunzio and Mary Albero (DeLuca).

Johanna graduated from Pelham High School in 1952, and went on to become a registered nurse from New Rochelle Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. She started her career as a nurse and went on to work for New Rochelle Hospital in the acute care unit. Later in her career she worked as a teacher's assistant at Bedford Hills Elementary School, until her retirement.

She loved playing Mahjong with her dear friends and was very grateful for wonderful neighbors, and her life was enriched by a supportive environment. Johanna was passionate about gardening throughout her life and happiest "playing in the dirt" with her trusty shovel in hand. We all have vivid memories of her enjoying being outside re-potting plants, and schooling us on how to grow vegetables and when to plant flowers. Johanna loved painting things - buckets, wheelbarrows, and baskets are just a few of the many flea market makeover miracles she performed while savoring the sunshine, and enjoying the birds that visited her many birdhouses. There are many wonderful memories for us to recall about this strong, resilient, independent woman. She had a great sense of humor, was a devoted sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a caring and thoughtful friend. Words cannot express how much we will all miss her, but we take solace in knowing she is finally at peace in God's hands.

Johanna is survived by two sisters, Barbara D'Amato, and Maria Smith (Richard). Three daughters, Teresa Sbordon (David), Nancy Jo Greene, and Anne Cahill (Joseph McNally). Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Ethan, Kathryn (Michael), Caitlyn (Ryan), Joey, Alex, Claire, Charlotte, Madelyn, Hayden Jo, Michael Jr., Emma, Harper, and Liam.

Visitation will be in the Daily Chapel at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main Street South in Southbury on Wednesday, October 13 at 10:00am, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Johanna's name to an individual's charity of choice.
