Barbara Egli Cawley passed away peacefully on Friday, March 20, 2020, after a very brief illness.
Born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1926, Barbara came to the United States in 1949 after completing her degree in early childhood education in Switzerland. Circumstances brought her to Woodbury, Connecticut in 1950 where she spent the next 65 years, after which she moved to Pomperaug Woods in Southbury.
For 22 years, Barbara ran a kindergarten and nursery school on Church Street in Woodbury and, to this day, is fondly remembered by former students. She treasured these years. When she retired, she volunteered at the Senior Center and delivered Meals on Wheels for 16 years. Also, she was an active member of the Women’s Club of Woodbury, involved in most town activities such as the Scholarship Fund, Christmas House Tour and Daffodils for Cancer to name a few. Barbara’s interests included travel, hiking, education, literature, flowers, plants and especially friends.
Barbara was predeceased by her three brothers and ex-husband. Her many friends were her family, including her aides at Pomperaug Woods who helped her in so many ways in the last years of her life.
Barbara wrote, “I am thankful for my good & interesting life and the many wonderful people I met, loved & admired. Thank you all. As Adlai Stevenson said on his 60th birthday, ‘The best in one’s life are one’s friends.”
