SOUTHBURY - Louis S. Alongi, 89, departed this life on May 9, 2019, at Vitas Hospice at St Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury, CT. He was the beloved husband of 53 years to Mary E. (Mayo) Alongi. Lou was born in Auburn, NY on February 14, 1930, to the late Francesco "Frank" and Alfonsina (Scozzari) Alongi.

Lou joined the Air Force in October 1950, serving until 1954. Following his honorable discharge, Lou initially attended The University of Notre Dame, but returned home to upstate NY after the death of his brother. Lou helped with his brother’s young family, finishing his business undergraduate degree at Syracuse University. Lou worked as a Bid Cost Estimator, predominantly in the Aerospace industry, including Raytheon, RCA, and Pratt & Whitney. He also completed a Master of Science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Hartford Graduate Center.

Lou was an avid bicycle rider until aged 85, who also loved to swim in the ocean. He was a photo hobbyist responsible for many wonderful pictures, often of his own lovely gardens.

Besides his loving wife Mary, Lou is survived by his children; Mark Alongi (Tania) of Onset, MA and Mary Shemanski (Steven) of Middletown, CT and as well as his grandchildren: Angelo and Olivia Alongi, and Nathan Shemanski. Lou is predeceased by his siblings John, Alfonso, Antoinette, and Susan. His sister Josephine (Alongi) McCabe resides in Tully, NY. His many nieces and nephews live throughout the US.

A Calling Hour beginning at 10:00 AM, will precede a Mass of Christian Burial which will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 910 Main Street South, Southbury, CT. Interment with military honors will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 12:00 PM, at the CT Veteran's Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown, CT.
